It was my intention to attend the Portland Night Market in Portland's east side produce district last night, but wow, I do hate crowds, and this was intensely crowded. It seems to be the case with Portland events more and more these days. Street photography was going to be impossible. So I visited some of my favorite haunts around some East side neighborhoods, and made my first real attempt at some night photography. Not bad for a first go! First stop was Bocci's - my alltime favorite homestyle Italian cafe down on 7th just south of Hawthorne. It was appropriately busy on a Friday night, but not insanely so. The fare was marvelous as always.

I admit to loving these old structures. The architecture of newer churches is just uninspired and frankly empty.
And then there was this church in Naselle, Washington, where I stopped, desperate for some iced tea and an opportunity to stretch my legs.
Last year we harvested two gorgeous apples from our tree after thinking all of the apples had been lost to worms. Yet, in early September I took out the compost, looked up, and there were two gorgeous apples that had escaped the infestation. They were wonderful, crisp apples. One was eaten sliced, and one became spiced apple waffles.
This year, I was also afraid we had not been successful in our efforts to grow apples. I often thank the powers of the universe that I do not need to live off of what i can grow, though my weight concerns would diminish considerably. Yet here they are - while four apples managed to stay on the tree, three of them were in good shape. I haven't decided what to do with them yet. One may be a birthday gift for my brother. I hope he will understand the value of one beautiful apple. |
